As many of you will know, we have, for many years, been authorised by SKY, as an Authorised Sky Agent (ASA), to carry out installations on its behalf. Indeed we have enjoyed a relationship with SKY since the launch of its products decades ago, right back to the days when Princes TV operated from a portacabin on Den’s parents’ drive at Moreton Street in Prees.

Throughout this association, we have been proud to provide our customer base with a clear alternative to SKY Direct, and we’re confident that SKY, as an organisation, has benefited from the relationship, knowing that potential and existing subscribers have received the personal care and attention routinely expected from an independent retailer and installer.

However, for some time now, we have suspected that SKY’s use of the independent sector has been under review, and that decision makers within SKY had shifted their attention to the use of companies specialising in telephone sales.

Our suspicions were further aroused by SKY’s somewhat baffling decision to limit the installation of its much vaunted product (SKY Q) to its own workforce, whilst still expecting ASAs to sell the product on its behalf.

In our view, this decision fundamentally undermined our credibility as a “local SKY expert”, particularly as many potential customers were attracted to SKY, through Princes, because of our ability to carry out tailored installations.

Our suspicions have proved correct. We have now been informed, in a letter dated 19th February 2018, following “a review of our Independent Retailer Strategy”, of SKY’s intention to terminate our status as an ASA, with effect from 22nd May.

Please be clear that, from this date, we shall be unable to:

· Demonstrate SKY products in-store.

· Provide advice on SKY packages.

· Liaise with SKY on your behalf.

· Order SKY viewing cards or boxes.

· Carry out SKY installations.

​Regrettably, this will also apply to existing SKY subscribers, even if you ordered your SKY package, and received your SKY installation, from ourselves.

As far as we can establish, this decision by SKY will mean that new subscribers will only be offered the SKY Q product, as for some time now it’s only the independent sector that’s been able to order and install the more established SKY+ HD Box. 

SKY Q is undoubtedly an excellent product, and is particularly suited to families wanting to view on different media, in a number of rooms, or to those customers wanting to record and store a huge volume of programmes.

It is, however, more expensive and is somewhat “over the top” for customers with more basic requirements. As such, there is, in our view, the potential for the SKY Q product to be miss-sold. To find out which Sky product is right for you, please visit our comparison table

We can still operate as an ASA during our 3 month notice period. If you’re considering SKY as an option, and would welcome independent advice on the right package for you, or are looking for a tailored HD+ installation, then please contact us as a matter of urgency!

Finally, whilst clearly regretting SKY’s decision, we’d like to place on record our thanks for the help and support received from a number of SKY representatives throughout our association. Particular thanks are extended to Catherine Cox whose enthusiasm was infectious, and who became a genuine friend of the business over many years.
